GMPA’s design for the Busan Opera House International Competition capitalizeson the unique attributes of its enviable site—its location, marina waterfront, distant hillside views, and cultural significance. The vibrant design exudes tremendous energy and propelling, forward movement via a series of intricate geometries gleaned from its island location and its complex, harmonious program. The concept itself is inspired by the densely woven circulation within the City of Busan, South Korea. Multi-layers mimic the hillside topography and the valley beow, suggesting a connection to the city while the colorful, multi-dimensional angles comprising the structure symbolize Busan’s dynamic, progressively interactive culture with mesmerizing, vibrant colors that change 24/7.
