San Vicente Office Building
Projects
GMPA Architects designed an office building located on a prominent corner in West Los Angeles. The site is a wedge-shaped, triangular corner with a 10’ differential between the ground elevation of the south and the north side. The design concept is an energized, swirling 4-level structure. Dynamic, multi-shaped levels add visual interest and reinforce a connection to the street.
Its riveting, spiral shape is derived from the 10’ difference in elevation. The south and north elevations differ in response to elevation as well as sustainability concerns. Deep mullions on the south side provide sun protection, reduce the inside temperature and lower air conditioning usage. Conversely, northern exposure windows feature thinner mullions to enhance daylighting. Additionally, these window variations add extra punch to the design dynamics. Highly visible public space at the rounded corner encourages pedestrian activity and interaction. Design elements create openness, movement and a lively sense of urban energy.
