JHA Gonda West LA Campus
Projects
Designed as an integrated, urban village, the Gonda Healthy Aging Campus is carefully choreographed to blend with the neighboring commercial community in downtown Culver City / Los Angeles. The 5- and 6-story structures meld well with their eclectic neighbors, radiating a sense of warmth via a welcoming, residential-like façade; the use of stone, soft colors; and a lushly landscaped perimeter.
The program for this CCRC facility includes various levels of senior living—independent, assisted and memory care in addition to an on-campus All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) center. PACE provides seniors with access to the full continuum of preventive, primary, acute and long-term care services. The campus embraces healthy aging with features that include a senior wellness center with an indoor pool and spa for in-water activity as well as an educational center with meeting rooms and media equipment. Design challenges include incorporating an existing historical building into the design as well as fitting all of the program elements into the tight, infill site.
The design concept is very urban and emphasizes a strong relationship to the street, walkability, connectivity and integration of the campus with the local community. The arrival area on the Culver City side features an easy orientation with a generous drop off area. The new PACE Center, located on the ground floor and across from the Brotman Hospital, has its own separate drop off area and inside lobby. Conveniently above are the memory care units and assisted living units.
